artist statement

Life can sometimes seem repetitive or mundane, because it is what we see everyday. We become used to the same imagery--our drive to work or school, walking through the grocery store or sitting at home in front of our TV. What we miss are the beautiful color variations of the leaves on a tree, shadows of our car dappled on a dirt road, and the patterns created when we track through fresh snow.

As an artist, I pull these elements from nature or a scene, and amplify them through exaggerated color, heavy paint or abstraction. My goal is to create something more beautiful than what I see, or something that could otherwise be overlooked. My interest in nature manifests through my affinity for landscape painting and anything nature-themed; my involvement with the process of painting on canvas connects me with my subject matter.

I am based in Topeka, Kansas and graduated in May of 2022 with a BFA in Painting and Drawing at Washburn University. My art is about elements I see in everyday life, and how I intensify the visual aspects through art making. In the past, I worked mainly in oil paint, creating landscapes, and have also enjoyed sculpture and ceramics, and how I can work in a “painterly” style, with the exception of paint as my vehicle to do so.

Past college, I've continued my journey with art through mixed media works with acrylic paint, oil pastel, second-hand beads, glitter and found objects. The diversity in materials keep me inspired to continue creating works that make me happy and fill my heart with ongoing love for all types of creating.

Recently, I've learned about fiber arts, and landed on crochet as my recent fixation. I have a shop open selling my creations, and the endless possibilities keep me inspired. I love the way that fine art and crafting can intertwine, and I've been fixated on ways to mold them together.
